Why did you become a grape grower?

After 35 years of working in the corporate world, I wanted to become my own boss. I looked around at all sorts of options, including avocado farming. However, when I found this beautiful property in Sonoma County, I was keenly aware that grape growing would become my new career. My experiences in the business world have been helpful in operating and managing the vineyard. It’s really terrific to wake up to the beauty of the vineyard and know that your commute is only a few steps outside your front door!

Farming philosophy:

Never assume you know everything you need to know. Always keep learning, asking questions, networking, and seeking advice.

What changes in farming practice do you anticipate making in the next 5 years?

Continuing emphasis on sustainable practices. More focus on and the refining of the efficiency of operations.

What is your worst horror story in grape growing?

Five years ago we returned from a mini vacation to Big Sur. Since it was the last weekend in April, we believed we were pretty safe from the risk of frost and the need to man the wind machine. Not true! We suffered damage in a low-lying area of the vineyard. Now, we wait until later in May to take vacation.

Is your vineyard designated on any wine labels?

It has been in the past and will most likely be designated on a release for the 2003 and 2004 crush.

What is your favorite food/wine combination?

Well-chilled Chardonnay with creamy blue cheese on pears.

Employee note:

(longest number of years for an employee – or other interesting insights) Jesus Garcia has worked with us for 14 years. He lives on the property with his wife and 3 children.

Advice for young people:

Develop good business skills. They will always be valuable in whatever career choice you make.

Any other information that you would like to include about yourself, the ranch, your business, family or history of the area:

My wife, Barbara, retired from her company in 2001 and immediately enrolled in Spanish and viticulture classes at SRJC. She has been helpful in growing grapes and keeping things running smoothly at the ranch. She has also become involved in our “world-class” organic tomato business. My four sons, their wives and my 10 grand children visit as often as possible.
