SCW Statement on Use of Roundup in Vineyards

March 31, 2015 -- Roundup is a popular agriculture and consumer product used to control annual and noxious weeds. Roundup has been registered for use both in the United States and California for nearly thirty-years.  It is one of the most effective and safest tools available for farmers to eradicate weeds which divert precious water and nutrients from plants while eliminating manual weeding. In obtaining and maintaining its registration with both the federal and state government, the manufacturer of Roundup conducts very thorough toxicity tests to verify its safe use including evaluating risks to all age groups and farm workers; considering worse case estimates for exposures from pesticide drift, movement, food, drinking water and use around home and public places; and worst case estimates for impacts on the environment.  Those results are submitted and reviewed by both the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of California EPA.  The government experts continue to recognize that Roundup is safe and we will continue to support its use.
