John Pelkan

John started his ranch with his wife Carolyn in 1984 in the Knights Valley. The ranch has 24 acres planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. John is very involved in the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission having served as a Commissioner and is currently a member of the Marketing Committee.

Total acreage managed and grape varieties planted:

65 acres total ranch; 24 planted. 5 Merlot, 5 Cab Franc, 5 Syrah, 2.5 Grenache and 6.5 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Why did you become a grape grower?

At the urging of friends in the wine business and the fact we determined we had good soils and water in an excellent appellation.

Farming philosophy:

To maximize quality from 5 premium varieties planted on very distinctive (different) soils within our property.

What changes in farming practice do you anticipate making in the next 5 years?

More sustainable practices.

What was your worst horror story in grape growing?

Almost planted AXR-1 back in 1988. Canceled order just in time and had to wait a year for alternate rootstock; S04

Is your vineyard designated on any wine labels?

Which ones? Not yet but it has been discussed and suggested by Sterling Vineyards.

What is your favorite food/wine combination?

Wild duck with Charbono or a big Rhone blend.

My one primary ranch worker, who had become ranch foreman left after 11 years (who worked for me 3 to 4 days per week), for full-time employment with our next door neighbor; Joe Montana.
