George MacLeod

George and Greta MacLeod planted 30 acres in 1974 planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Merlot. Their Sonoma Valley Sauvignon Blanc is now used by Bezinger as a single vineyard wine. The family is also now making their own Sauvignon Blanc from the ranch under the MacLeod Family Vineyard label.

Twenty-seven years.

50 total acreage, 30 acres planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Merlot.

Why did you become a grape grower?

After working 30 years for large companies I wanted to have my own business.

Farming philosophy:

From day one we have focused on quality fruit.

What changes in farming practice do you anticipate making in the next 5 years?

Some how or another we will have to mechanize a significant portion of our operation.

What was your worst horror story in grape growing?

When we discovered Phylloxera in our vineyard in 1992. This meant we had to replant everthing. An out of pocket cost of $500,000.

Is your vineyard designated on any wine labels?

Which ones? Wellington Zinfandel.

What is your favorite food/wine combination?

Sauvignon Blanc with fish chowder.
